In the February 1986 issue of “Animage” (published by Tokuma Shoten), a novel supplement depicted Four before the events of Zeta Gundam. This sidestory was an original work by one of the screenwriters, Akinori Endo. The work delves into the unspoken aspects of the main story, exploring the elusive “lost memories” that Four yearned to uncover. In this story, she was known as Kyou before being named Four. Additionally, Jill, the younger brother of Miharu Ratokie from Mobile Suit Gundam, makes an appearance.
Initially, the novel was a rare find due to its limited release as a magazine supplement. However, in 2001, it was revised, restructured, and published as a paperback under the Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko series titled “Four’s Story: And As A Soldier…” (ISBN 4-04-411906-6). When Endo was later tasked with the novelization of “Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ,” the editors who were initially apprehensive about his abilities as an inexperienced newcomer found solace in this novel’s success.
Six years after the conclusion of the One Year War (UC0086~0087). A girl who lost not only her parents, but her own memory by a colony dropping thanks to the Zeon, is recruited into a Newtype research institute (the Murasame Labs). After aimlessly wandering, she becomes test subject No. 004 (aka “Four”). Here she is trained to become a strengthened human with two other subjects (No. 005 Jill Ratokie and No. 006 Amari Garfield). The intense training killed many people, and yet through it all Four and Jill comfort each other. On the other side of the spectrum, at the Augusta Laboratory, Dr. Murasame learns of their plans to create another artificial newtype: Rosamia Badam. Murasame studies Rosamia’s memory. It appears that the fear of a colony dropping amplified the newtype potential. In order to do this, Amari and Jill would be used.
