There are two novels related to Char’s Counterattack known as Hi-Streamer and Beltorchika’s Children. This particular page refers to the novel Hi-Streamer (later High Streamer) serialized in the anime magazine Animage. Originally serialized from 1987 to 1988, it was later revised and published as standalone volumes under the title “Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack” by Animage Bunko.

Director Tomino initially conceived the film version of Char’s Counterattack as part of the story in Hi-Streamer. The narrative in the novel begins prior to the events of the film and gradually aligns with the film’s storyline around the second volume. The novel introduces mobile suits that didn’t appear in the film, and even includes beam sabers designed for human use. At the time, illustrations were drawn by renowned sci-fi artist Yukinobu Hoshino, featuring mobile suits with designs distinct from the ones commonly known.

In 2002, the novel was reissued by Tokuma Dual Bunko under it’s original title, “Hi-Streamer” (though now stylized as High Streamer). The reissued version featured updated illustrations by Chimaki Kuori, although the previous illustrations by Hoshino were included as bonuses at the end of each volume. While the Animage Bunko editions were long out of print, they were reprinted in 2009.
