After the end of the One Year War, mobile suit manufacturing was almost entirely monopolized by Anaheim Electronics, which was based out of the lunar city of Von Braun. Mobile suits and even the main components of nuclear reactors were furnished by the company to the Federation Forces, Zeon remnants of Axis and the Delaz Fleet as well as the anti-Earth Federation government organization AEUG, and the independent nation of Cosmo Babylonia founded by the Ronah Family. However it was SNRI (the Strategic Naval Research Institute), developed from the Strategy and Tactics Research Institute within the Federation Forces, which caused a crack in the oligopoly of AE.

Engineers who were dissatisfied with AE began to develop their own mobile suits under the protection of SNRI. SNRI had submitted a proposal to the Federation Assembly regarding the miniaturization of mobile suits. However, development was delegated to Anaheim Electronics in accordance with tradition, which was likely due to AE’s strong influence within the Federation government. However, Anaheim sensed that the miniaturization was the byproduct of military budget reductions.

Furthermore, around U.C.0102 when the proposal was issued, Anaheim profited largely from the work orders relating to space battleship construction, materials production for the reconstruction of colonies rather than the manufacturing of mobile suits. Yet even within the Federation Forces, there was sufficient opinion for an overhaul on the RGM-89 Jegan, their mainstay mobile suit. For that reason, completion of the RGM-109, AE’s first miniaturized mobile suit, lagged considerably and took five years until it first rolled out.

SNRI was dissatisfied with the performance of the RGM-109 and completed their F90 independently with approval of the Assembly. The following year at the military’s evaluation examination, the F90 beat out AE’s anticipated next generation mainline mobile suit candidate, the MSA-120 and was adopted. However, it’s said that although the MSA-120 was unique from the exterior, it was nothing more than an upgraded variant of the Heavygun.

In order to counter SNRI’s “Formula Project,” Anaheim developed the Silhouette Formula Project. Based on the data that was illegally obtained (likely espionage), the RXF-91 Silhouette Gundam was completed and operational testing was started alongside the RGM-111 Hardygun, which is a development type of the Heavygun. Operational tests were conducted mainly on board the Federation Forces experimental ship Braywood. The final purpose of the Silhouette Formula Project was to complete the new RX-99 Neo Gundam based on the data obtained by the RXF-91.

The RX-99, although given the model number passed down to the RX-93 Nu Gundam (though not officially announced, there seems to be several prototype Gundams following this), but that doesn’t mean it was officially adopted in 0099, but that the wishes of the development staff for it to becomes the mainstay mobile suit that surpasses the F91. The internal code for this machine was AFX-9000 (Anaheim Formula Examination).

Anaheim considered retaliating against SNRI and the successor model to the RX-99 would receive the model number RX-100 (denoting new century series).

The surprising aspect of this new mobile suit is that it adopted the core block system for the first time in many years. For the core fighter, not only does the aircraft itself become the cockpit of the mobile suit, but the engines also become the thruster portion as well. Furthermore, it will also be carrying a special weapon called the G-B.R.D. This closely resembles the core block system of the RX-78 GP01, which was secretly active in U.C.0083. This system eliminates poor cost performance of the propulsion unit that is hidden and wasted by docking. In the case of the RX-99, Anaheim was able to realize weight reduction and a higher output of the suit itself by adopting this method.

With the adoption of the core block system and accumulated technology from the Silhouette Formula Project, this unit became close to the F90IIIY Cluster Gundam as a result. By including the Silhouette Gundam’s actual data into it, it was the strongest class mobile suit at the time.

Two Neo Gundams were manufactured, but the specs between Unit 1 and Unit 2 differed. The first unit piloted by Commander Buzz Galemson was painted black and was said to be equipped with a control system that closely resembles a Neo Psycommu (seen as technology provided by the Crossbone Vanguard). Unit 2, which test pilot Tokio D. Randall was painted tricolor and was equipped with a standard control system.

Just before the Cosmo Babylonia founding war, two units were deployed to the Earth Federation Forces 306th Forces, but Ensign Randall stole Unit 2 because of the animosity towards the inhuman Commander Galemson. As a result, both units became locked in combat and it’s said that both units were lost.

A heavy weapon, high mobility general-purpose fighter equipped with beam Vulcans and four apogee motors. By folding the machine and blocking, it will turn into the cockpit and thrusters for the RX-99. Docking is possible without separating the body of the mobile suit like in the past.

A large beam rifle with a built-in generator. It combines the functions of the mega launcher (VSBR) and sub-flight system. It is a massive firearm that covers nearly the entire length of the mobile suit but the Neo Gundam can use the weapon with only one arm. With its immense power, it can pierce a colony’s mirror and “river” and beyond that, destroy the bridge of a space battleship.

Defensive equipment that forms a beam barrier. Unlike the Silhouette Gundam which generated beam barriers in the front and rear, it became possible to deploy the beam 360 degrees.
