INTRODUCTION U.C.0085

A space colony 6.4km in diameter, rotating once every 113.5 seconds, generates 1G of centrifugal force.
What pins us to this earth isn’t true gravity at all.

The heavens aren’t over our heads, but under our feet.
Those of us born in the colonies know nothing of real gravity or real skies.

Or, naturally, of real seas.

STORY
U.C.0085 ≫SIDE 6 IZUMA COLONY

When a “Perfectly Ordinary” High School Girl Encounters War

It is U.C. 0085, five years since the end of the One Year War. In the Izuma Colony of Side 6, high school student Amate Yuzuriha is going about her everyday life, until one day, she crosses paths with a girl named Nyaan, who is in the middle of a curious part-time job. Acting as a “courier,” Nyaan is transporting a device used to enable mobile suit combat. Following her to deliver this device to its recipient, a junk shop called Kaneban, Amate finds herself confronted by a looming Zaku. And just outside the workshop, two additional mobile suits appear.

These two suits, one a red Gundam, the other the GQuuuuuuX, a newly developed model by the Principality of Zeon, had shown up for a reason. Zeon’s Challia Bull had dispatched the GQuuuuuuX in order to recapture the red Gundam, which had vanished from the public eye for years. However, the pilot Xavier fails to activate the machine’s Omega Psycommu system in time. The plan unravels, and local military police intervene.

Watching it all unfold, Amate grows furious at how the MP Zaku tramples the nearby refugee zone with zero regard for the collateral damage. In a moment of anger, she impulsively climbs into the Zaku owned by Kaneban, and then, after discovering the GQuuuuuuX in a disused section of the colony’s bulkhead mine, she switches over to pilot that suit instead. Despite being a novice, she successfully powers up the GQuuuuuuX and ends up engaging the military police Zaku in open space. Amid the red Gundam’s presence and a strange sensation she calls the “sparkle,” Amate awakens to new abilities and defeats the MP Zaku.

The sparkle that changes battles, and the very world.

The incident, now involving Amate, spirals into a major affair. The GQuuuuuuX’s pilot, Xavier, is arrested on the spot by the military police. When it becomes clear the police refuse to release him, the Principality of Zeon protests this development by sending the assault carrier Sodon into the colony’s port. Amate returns home, only to discover that Annqi from Kaneban, the one who made off with the GQuuuuuuX, has extended an invitation for her to join Team Pomeranians, a group preparing for Clan Battle.

Clan battles are an illegal high-stakes match in which mobile suits fight in two-person teams. Though torn about whether to join, Amate finds graffiti along the canal wall depicting the same “sparkle” motif she experienced. There, she meets a boy named Shuji and once again encounters Nyaan. Introducing herself as Machu, she invites Shuji to join her for a clan battle. In response, Shuji leads her to a hidden underground hangar, where he reveals a red Gundam he has kept in storage.

When the clan battle finally begins, Machu and Shuji face off against two Zaku units known collectively as Mav. Machu struggles at first, unable to summon the “sparkle” phenomenon that aided her in the previous fight. However, inspired by Shuji’s red Gundam, she once again taps into that mysterious spark, and this time, the two of them coordinate like the Mav duo itself, achieving a spectacular victory.

MOBILE SUIT U.C.0085

During the One Year War of U.C. 0079, newly developed mobile suits, both Principality of Zeon–made and Earth Federation–made, became the driving force on every battlefield. Even after the war, although various bans and restrictions were placed on further mobile suit research, both powers continued development. By U.C. 0085, a new Gundam-type unit had emerged, equipped with an evolved psycommu system, an offshoot of the one installed in the elusive red Gundam.

gMS-Ω
GQuuuuuuX

This cutting-edge prototype mobile suit, designed for Newtypes, somehow incorporates the highly forbidden psycommu technology, banned after the One Year War, and even pushes it further, employing a mysterious unit called the Omega Psycommu. When the Omega Psycommu is activated, the head-mounted blade antenna (doubling as a restraint mechanism) detaches, and a brainwave-control interface deploys within the cockpit. At that point, all movement transitions to direct psycommu control. Standard armaments include a beam saber and beam rifle, supplemented by a shield that supports a one-field generator. It also features a Core Fighter component capable of functioning as a backpack, or, if separated, flying independently.

Pilots: Xavier Olivette, Amate Yuzuriha (aka Machu)

Head Height: 18.0m
Overall Height: 18.2m (when Omega Psycommu active)
Base Weight: 42.4t
Full Weight: 48.8t
Armaments: beam saber x 2, beam rifle, tomenosuke heat hawk, shield, neck-mounted vulcans

gMS-α
RED GUNDAM

This elusive red mobile suit first made its reappearance in U.C. 0085, though its true identity is believed to be the RX-78-02 Gundam, developed by the Earth Federation during the One Year War and seized by Zeon during its final testing phase. After capture, Zeon modified and repainted it in red for Char Aznable’s use. New additions from the Principality included an Alpha-type psycommu system and Bits (wireless, psycommu-linked weapons). Both the suit and Char himself disappeared during the so-called Zeknova event that occurred at the end of the One Year War, during the Second Battle of Solomon. Its whereabouts remained unknown until it resurfaced at Side 6 in the hands of a young pilot named Shuji Itou.

Head Height: 18.0m
Base Weight: 44.4t
Armaments (as of U.C.0085): beam saber x 2, head-mounted vulcan x 2, bits x 2, shield, Gundam hammer

MS-06-SSP
POLICE ZAKU

After the One Year War, the colonies of Side 6, fearing Zeon’s growing power, reorganized their Coastal Guard into a heavily armed military police. For their mobile suit division, they adopted Zaku units that were originally manufactured by the Principality of Zeon. Known as the Military Police Zaku, these machines are readily identified by the rotating warning light on the shoulders. Their standard armaments include a baton, a sasumata (spear-like restraining tool), and a Zaku machine gun. Special-forces versions carry extra boosters for high mobility and a modified Zaku machine gun. Many local residents argue that this level of firepower is excessive for simple self-defense.

Pilots (Special Forces Variant): Raggucci, Arraga

SODON

Originally one of the Earth Federation’s Pegasus-class assault carriers, this vessel was stationed at Side 7 for final testing. During the incident in which Char stole the Gundam, the Principality of Zeon seized the ship as well. Char completely destroyed the original bridge, so the current command deck is a Zeon-built replacement. Along with the repair work, the ship underwent a full repaint and was renamed from Pegasus to Sodon. By U.C. 0085, it remains in active service under the command of Challia Bull’s forces.

Captain: Russet

ZAKU
Pomeranians Version

Owned and heavily modified by the junk dealer Kaneban, this unit was also a decommissioned Zaku sold into civilian hands. Repurposed for illegal prize battles known as Clan Battles, it once served in matches for Team Pomeranians, organized by Kaneban. However, the suit’s combat device broke, rendering it temporarily incapable of fighting. Its only functioning weapon is the Tomenoske heat hawk, a civilian-manufactured replica of the standard Zaku heat hawk.

ZAKU
Clan Battle Version

Following the war, many Zaku units were sold off to the private sector, though only after their combat-installer devices had been removed, leaving them suitable mainly for construction or other civilian tasks. Nevertheless, clandestine modifications for use in illegal Clan Battle tournaments have become widespread. Though the color schemes and design elements are left to personal preference, one can easily see these machines rely on a patchwork of limited parts.

ZAKU
CIVILIAN VERSION

Among civilian companies, some Zakus are used for construction, as evidenced by units belonging to Kuroshio Construction, which typically feature modified manipulators in place of standard arms, along with hazard lights and extra covers for safe materials transport. The Zaku’s famed versatility and expandability thus proves equally valuable in private-sector work.

CHARACTERS

AMATE YUZURIHA

Age: 17
Alias: Machu

A high school girl living in the Izma Colony of Side 6. Her father works away from home in a different colony, so she shares a household with her mother, Tamaki Yuzuriha. Though her school life and daily routine in the colony are perfectly peaceful, she sometimes feels as if it’s all somehow “fake.” After meeting the courier girl Nyaan, Amate becomes entangled in a conflict that leads her to pilot the GQuuuuuuX. There, she experiences a mysterious phenomenon she calls the “sparkle” and crosses paths with Shuji, pilot of the red Gundam, an encounter that awakens her latent abilities. Under the nickname Machu, she later finds herself participating in illicit mobile suit battles known as Clan Battles.

HARO

A talking AI robot that assists Machu, despite her inexperience, when she pilots both the Zaku and the GQuuuuuuX. The structures on either side of its head function as speakers. Since the robot “looked cold” with nothing on, someone gave it a knit cap to wear.

NYAAN

Age: 17
A girl who works part-time as an illicit courier. When her home colony turned into a battlefield during her childhood, she fled alone in a patched-together mobile suit, never getting a chance to confirm the fate of her family. Rescued by a passing ship, she eventually ended up in Amate’s home colony of Izuma. One day, while delivering a certain device, she came under interrogation by the colony’s military police, forcing her to flee. In the process, she crossed paths with Machu and accompanied her to Kaneban, Ltd., the intended recipient of her package. On a subsequent job, she meets Machu again and witnesses her and Shuji—teaming up as “Mav”—fight in a Clan Battle.

Shuji Ito

Age: 17
A mysterious youth who appears at Side 6 piloting a red Gundam. In order to spray-paint graffiti on the exteriors of various colonies, he uses the red Gundam to move from place to place, earning himself a wanted status with the local military police. Although he engages the GQuuuuuuX that appears at Side 6 to track his Gundam, he slips away without being captured. Later, he reunites with Machu and Nyaan. When Machu enters a Clan Battle with the GQuuuuuuX, Shuji intervenes with his red Gundam—joining her side as a “Mav” partner—to help secure victory.

Konch
A four-legged robot that Shuji dotes on. Originally a children’s toy, it has been extensively “modded” by Shuji, who has added cameras, limbs, and more. Its leg-arm implements can transform into welding tools or pincers, and it loves to perch on people’s heads.

KANEBAN, Ltd.
A junk-dealing enterprise based in the Izuma Colony, led by a woman named Annqi. Not only does Kaneban buy and sell parts as a typical junk shop might, but it is also involved in off-the-books ventures like Clan Battle. Much of the day-to-day work falls to Nabu, Annqi’s right-hand man, while Kaine, a mechanic who graduated from a technical high school, handles repairs. Jezzi is on track to be one of Kaneban’s Clan Battle pilots, but a hot temper can be a liability. The team name “Pomeranians” stems from the breed of dog that Jezzi keeps as a pet. Annqi is the one who invited Machu to join Clan Battle. She’s an older-sister type—protective and big-hearted—and she immediately recognized Machu’s talent when the latter managed to pilot the GQuuuuuuX. She has apparently been divorced once in the past. Initially, the other members of Kaneban, Ltd. were reluctant to have Machu on board. However, they celebrate when Machu, alongside the GQuuuuuuX and the red Gundam, scores a victory in Clan Battle.

CIVILIANS

Tamaki Yuzuriha
Amate’s mother, employed in the Side 6 Audit Bureau. She cares deeply for her daughter, perhaps too much, and worries excessively about Amate’s future. The arrival of the Principality’s GQuuuuuuX and the assault carrier Sodon at Izuma Colony results in Tamaki being called to late-night emergency meetings at the bureau, leaving her extremely busy.

Cameron Bloom
Serving as an aide to the president of Side 6, he was once a staffer in the accounting branch of the Audit Bureau. Initially he declined the presidential offer of an advisory position but was more or less forced into it. Rumor has it he was once engaged but never made it to the altar.

Challia Bull
A Zeon commander widely known as the “Man Who Returned from Jupiter.” After hearing reports of the red Gundam’s reappearance, he travels to Side 6. Famed during the One Year War for his extraordinary Newtype abilities, Challia was feared in battle for piloting his mobile armor, nicknamed the “Gray Ghost.”

Xavier Olivette

Age: 23
A Zeon ensign and top graduate of the Flanagan School, suspected of having Newtype abilities. Even so, he fails to activate the Omega Psycommu system installed in the GQuuuuuuX.

Comoli Harcourt

Age: 23
Another Zeon ensign and an elite officer school graduate. Though she recognizes the high potential of Challia and Xavier, she remains skeptical about the very concept of Newtypes.

Sodon’s Crew
The staff of the assault carrier Sodon, which has docked at the Izuma Colony. The ship’s captain is Russet, a Zeon captain. Tangi serves as the helmsman, while Benoit handles communications. The bridge operators are Oshiro and Sefa, and Kowal, the technical officer, manages mobile suit maintenance. (Left to right: Russet, Kowal, Tangi, Oshiro, Sefa, Benoit)

Raggucci
A Side 6 military police officer piloting one of the Police Zaku units. He often patrols with his partner, Arraga, operating as a two-suit team nicknamed a “Mav.” When the red Gundam appears at Izuma Colony, Raggucci mobilizes to track it down.

Arraga
Another Side 6 military police officer piloting a Police Zaku. Tasked primarily with apprehending mobile suits that violate colony airspace, he also pursues the red Gundam. Arraga has shown disdain for the growing population of refugees in the colony.

Chaichi
A detective in Side 6’s military police public security division. He bears strong resentment toward the Principality of Zeon for meddling in Side 6’s policies, despite their purported neutrality. Chaichi apprehends Xavier, the GQuuuuuuX’s pilot, and subjects him to interrogation.

Ward
Also a detective in the military police public security division, Ward is Chaichi’s partner. He opposes the Principality’s rising influence, fearing that Side 6’s neutral stance may be compromised if the colony becomes embroiled in armed conflict.

0079.08
The Federation begins final testing of its new mobile suits, including the Gundam, at Side 7.

0079.09.18
A Zeon unit led by Char Aznable infiltrates Side 7, capturing the Federation’s newly developed Gundam and seizing the Pegasus. Char, piloting the stolen Gundam, engages the Federation’s RX-78-01 Gundam, destroying it. During this operation, the Zeon pilot Gene is forced to stand down due to a malfunction in his Zaku and does not participate.

The captured Gundam and Pegasus are delivered to Dozle Zabi. A joint team under Kycilia and Dozle begins analyzing the Gundam. As a result, Zeon cancels its plan to build a large-scale mobile armor equipped with psycommu technology. The Pegasus is repainted, renamed Sodon, and incorporated into Zeon’s Space Assault Force.

Meanwhile, Garma Zabi, commander of Zeon’s Earth Attack Force, resigns from Zeon’s military due to a personal matter.

0079.10–11
Under pressure from the Federation’s counteroffensive, Zeon withdraws from Odessa and North America, both of which it had briefly occupied.

0079
Around the same time, Zeon executes another drop operation against the Federation’s main base at Jaburo but eventually retreats. The Federation, having retained experimental models of the Guncannon, decides to mass-produce it as a Light Cannon.

Zeon proceeds with reverse-engineering the captured Gundam to develop new mobile suits. Zeonic’s MS-14 project is defeated in development competition, and a simplified Gundam-based mobile suit is officially adopted instead. At Dozle Zabi’s request, efforts to mass-produce the Big Zam continue.

On the Moon at Granada, the Flanagan Agency begins installing psycommu systems in new mobile suit designs.

The First Battle of Solomon erupts. The Federation employs its Solar System weapon. Dozle Zabi deploys in the first Big Zam unit but is defeated. Solomon falls to the Federation.

Challia Bull returns from Jupiter and meets Char Aznable. A Gundam fitted with a psycommu system attacks Solomon’s docking facilities using Bits. Challia Bull sorties as well, having just received the mobile armor Kikeroga.

Zeon places M’Quve in overall command of the battle for Luna II. Federation officer Wakkein, facing defeat, launches a plan to drop Confeito (the captured fortress Solomon) onto Granada. M’Quve, in turn, orders Char’s troops, who have been standing by, to defend Granada.

The Second Battle of Solomon begins. Char launches an assault on Solomon using the Sodon, successfully landing troops. Although Char’s forces fail to halt the dropping fortress, a phenomenon known as “Zeknova” occurs, foiling Wakkein’s plan.

Luna II subsequently falls to Zeon. The Federation Forces high command opens negotiations for a ceasefire.

0080.01.03
With the Federation in full retreat, the One Year War concludes.
