In providing some lineart and background material to MAHQ for Iron Blooded Orphans, someone asked me to look at some of the articles contained in the Mechanical Works book. So, I’ll start working on some of them in between projects that I have going on. Here’s one of them from the book:
BACKGROUND OF THE POST DISASTER WORLD
THE POWER TO CHANGE THE WORLD: WHAT ARE MOBILE SUITS?
FEASIBILITY OF AHAB REACTOR REALIZED BY MARS HALF METAL
NANO-LAMINATE ARMOR DETERMINES ARMAMENTS FOR A MOBILE SUIT
THE ALAYA-VIJNANA SYSTEM THAT DETERMINES BATTLE
RISK FACTORS OF GUNDAM FRAMES LEFT BEHIND IN THE WORLD
Mobile armors, annointed with the names of angels, reduced the world to ashes in the Calamity War. It was the Gundam Frames, named after the 72 demons that King Solomon employed as told in Goetia, that brought about their end. Much like the demons of King Solomon, Gundam Frames played an active role in the Calamity War and 72 units were eventually produced. During the Calamity War, the names of individual demons were given to the various suits, with the Gundam Bael, piloted by Agnika Kaieru, a spoken hero, as the lead. It is unknown for what reasons the demons were named, but it may have been included in the desires to destroy the angelic mobile armors.
Following the Calamity War, of the 72 Gundam Frames, the whereabouts of 26 of them was said to be known. In particular, suits deeply connected to the Seven Stars are enshrined in special hangers at Vingólf, the headquarters of Gjallarhorn.
Among them is one that is considered to be symbolic: the Gundam Bael. Bael was the unit piloted by the hero Agnika Kaieru which led to the end of the Calamity War. Following the end of the war, it functioned as a symbol, serving as a reminder of his power. As the Bael was being enshrined, it is said that Gundams of other houses of the Seven Stars were being watched over.
On the other hand, unlike machines which are regulated to some extent, what became to many of them is unknown due to the confusion after the Calamity War. It wasn’t unusual for some to find their way onto the black market amidst the turmoil of the postwar period or to be abandoned as they were on the battlefield.
For example, the scars of the Calamity War even extended to Mars, but due to the weak impact of Gjallarhorn following the war, several Gundam Frames remained uncollected. The Gundam Flauros was excavated with an immobilizing Pluma just like it was a fossilized dinosaur, harkening back to the fierce battle at that time.
Tekkadan has demonstrated to the world, through their great efforts of the resurrected Gundam Barbatos, that the threat of the Gundam Frame’s remains alive even now some three hundred years later. Gjallarhorn, which has misgivings about such dangers, is unable to deny the possibility that armed insurgents or illegal organizations who desire power would seek out the Gundam Frames. The day when a new Gundam Frame is confirmed isn’t that far off in the future.
