RGM-89S STARK JEGAN
This is a variation of the RGM-89 Jegan, designed for heavy artillery combat. It features a dual-seat configuration, with a weapons control officer riding alongside the pilot. The inclusion of nuclear missiles is prohibited by the Antarctic Treaty, so these are not intended for military use; they are specifically meant for countering threats such as asteroid impacts. Due to its exceptional performance, it later served as the basis for the redesign of the Jegan into the D-type.
MWS-19051G D GUNDAM FIRST
In U.C. 0090, the Monotone Mouse company developed a custom-made Mobile Worker by assembling components according to universal standards. Despite being developed for civilian purposes, this Mobile Worker achieved combat capabilities equivalent to second-generation mobile sits. This design lineage can be traced to later models like the RF Series. The development data of this Mobile Worker was later adapted for use in the Stark GM.
THE BIRTH AND FLOURISHING OF A TRANSNATIONAL PUBLIC ENTERPRISE: THE COLONY PUBLIC CORPORATION
As the electoral tide of Amelia rolls ever closer, whispers of electoral misconduct within segments of the defense forces seem to have ebbed away into media silence. Since the era of the Titans, it’s generally considered prudent for the military to refrain from political interference—a principle I dearly hope current stakeholders heed.
Today, let us turn our attention away from military matters and toward an actor with a different kind of firepower: The Colony Management Public Corporation, or what some colloquially refer to as the Colony Public Corporation.
× × ×
Thus, even in the Antarctic Treaty, the Corporation’s neutrality is as guaranteed much like that that of the Jupiter Fleet and the Public Corporation of Space Transport.
The Corporation is strictly forbidden from maintaining its own military force. Naturally, the Federation Forces and private military companies provide protection for the Corporation’s operation, but should the Corporation itself possess armaments, it risks becoming a dictator exerting control over the space-dwelling populace, the so-called Spacenoids.
However, the Corporation faces an “enemy” entirely distinct from terrorists or space pirates. They face threats from “mass objects,” such as space debris and asteroids—the very matter that floats in space. The countless remnants generated by wars and the impacts of asteroids from outer space could instantly shatter materials like acrylic slate on colonies, as our readers surely understand.
The catastrophe when small celestial objects like Luna II or Axis strike Earth or colonies is beyond imagination, and it’s no surprise that the Corporation’s aspiration was to have agile interception capabilities.
In the winter of U.C. 0093, the Corporation approached Anaheim for the purchase of their latest heavy assault mobile suit, the RGM-89S Stark Jegan. While incidents like the Axis and 5th Luna drops were Earth-centric, a similar assault aimed at a Side or the Moon necessitated that the Corporation possess its own means of interception.
However, the proposal was stymied by the Federation government. In the wake of Char’s Rebellion, it was deemed far too risky to supply the most cutting-edge mobile suits to a Spacenoid entity like the Corporation.
COLONY GUARDIAN: THE STARK GM
Nonetheless, the Corporation did not give up. They found an ally in Engiest Ronah, an Assemblyman at the time, who successfully championed the standalone purchase of the RGM-89S missile pods. This weapon suite features three mid-sized missiles with independent targeting systems and two larger missiles capable of housing nuclear warheads—an indispensable asset for the obliteration of high-mass asteroids or space debris.
The purchase of the nuclear warheads was approved, whereas the RGM-89S was not because the Corporation had long maintained a stockpile of nuclear materials intended for space exploration and asteroid destruction. The controversy arose when an organization other than the military would come into possession of a high-performance mobile suit armed with nuclear capabilities.
Chosen for the retrofit was the RGM-79GS GM Command. Developed by the Augusta Lab in the first phase after the One Year War, it had more specialized equipment for space combat than the RGM-79 GM. After the war, it had been largely decommissioned and sold on the civilian second-hand markets for work use at a stable price.
Tasked with its upgrade was Monotone Mouse, a colony redevelopment firm. Once a subsidiary of Anaheim, in January 0091, they became an independent entity after poaching staff from the Federation Forces Factory Base Ship, Arahas, severing their capital ties with Anaheim. Following the restructuring of SNRI in September 0093, they became poised to support SNRI’s mobile suit development as a venture firm.
Chief Designer Daryl Niel Guns adapted parts from a GM III retrofit kit, swapping out the generator with the RGM-179 GMII and the suit’s backpack to the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II. Below the knees, knee joint enhancement actuators, amplifier aiders, knee joint field motor amplifiers, propellant tanks, and additional thrusters were added to ensure the mobility and speed necessary for asteroid interception. While the head unit appeared unchanged from the front, its camera eye unit had been updated to 0093 standards (reportedly salvaged from the scrapped RGM-91S), and it became a conglomerate of composite sensors and an FCS system for precise asteroid detection, a testament to Monotone Mouse’s long-standing experience in colony construction. However, the vulcan guns remained dummies.
While the arm units saw no major modifications from the RGM-79GS, the shoulder armor was retrofitted to house missile launchers. This decision likely came from the fact that the unit wasn’t intended for ranged combat or close-quarters combat with mobile suits; the RGM-7 specifications were sufficient as space work machines.
Whatever the motivations behind the Corporation’s militarization, Monotone Mouse’s design was prudent, fulfilling its mandate to protect their colony from peril. But in a twist of irony, during the 0116 Trimurti Incident, this mobile suit—christened Stark GM—found itself drawn into combat against other mobile suits. The Corporation’s mobile suit forces, originally deployed to defend the construction of Trimurti from debris, found themselves embroiled in combat with the Oldsmobile Army. While they were armed with nuclear warheads, these were ineffective in anti-MS combat. Avoiding the violation of the Antarctic Treaty and refraining from nuclear use, they dealt with Legacy’s wave attacks using self-defense rifles and medium-range missiles. They managed to buy valuable time until the arrival of the FF Team.
This event can be heralded as the epitome of what the Colony Public Corporation envisioned itself as: protectors of citizens in space. Some Stark GM were later assigned to the 13th Experimental Battle Group with their nuclear capability disabled, participating in the First Oldsmobile War (all of which were lost in combat over Mars).
× × ×
In the current warring states period of outer space, the Corporation, flushed with abundant financial resources, has been purchasing the F8 Series thanks to their deep ties with SNRI, steadily building their private military. Though they claim it’s to prevent their colonies from being annexed by colony nations, they effectively forming their own armed faction. The idyllic days of a mobile suit like the Stark GM are long gone.
In closing, I must acknowledge the tremendous help from the members of the Holy Military Alliance in writing this article. I deeply empathize with their efforts to resist the escalation of war through open-source intelligence activities. Shouldn’t we, as military analysts, be the ones to lead the charge against war, striving to close the chapter on this warring states period in space?
