20 Years After Its Birth, the MS Symbolizing “Gundam” Has Shifted from the Zaku to the GM!
GMs Are hot right now!
For years, the Zaku—Zeon’s mass-produced mobile suit—was synonymous with the Mobile Suit Gundam series. But now, I’d argue that the GM has taken center stage as the hottest mobile suit.
True, there’s been a gradual reassessment of the GM, primarily in OVAs. Yet, this was merely a slight elevation from its supporting role to the protagonist Gundam. As we approach Gundam’s 20th anniversary, however, we’re witnessing a significant shift.
This shift is exemplified by Mobile Suit Gundam Side Story: The Blue Destiny, a Dreamcast game released by Bandai—the primary sponsor of the Gundam series—as part of the 20th-anniversary celebrations. In this game, players pilot a GM. One might expect this to be a typical “start weak, grow strong” gaming trope, but surprisingly, it’s not. The climactic battle sees the protagonist upgrading to a GM Sniper II. From start to finish, the GM remains the hero’s choice, with the titular Gundam conspicuously absent.
The trend continues with Gundam: The Ride, a high-profile attraction that opened at Fuji-Q Highland in July 2000. Despite its name, the Gundam itself is relegated to a cameo role while the GM steals the show. The ride leaves visitors with a newfound appreciation: “GMs are formidable! GMs are supreme!”
Even the 1996 OVA series Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team features a protagonist piloting a mass-produced Ground Type Gundam. While it bears the Gundam name, it’s essentially a slightly enhanced GM—a mass-produced unit with Gundam branding. Yet it proves more than capable as the hero’s machine. This marks a pivotal moment: the GM finally receives star treatment in original Gundam works.
Historically, GMs were mere cannon fodder in the Gundam universe. They paled in comparison to Zeon’s iconic Zaku, with fewer memorable moments and a generally forgettable presence. Their apparent weakness and frequent destruction at the hands of Zeon forces made them seem disposable. So why, on Gundam’s 20th anniversary, is the GM suddenly in the limelight? Is this just a coincidence?
Far from it. Two decades after Gundam’s inception, we’re finally recognizing the GM’s inherent value. Let’s explore the reasons behind this newfound appreciation.
