BEHIND-THE-SCENES OF GQuuuuuuX #2

Gundam GQuuuuuuX Bridged Old and New Fans: Synergy Born from Broadcast, Streaming, and Social Media

Interview with Director Kazuya Tsurumaki (Part 2)

With its rich tapestry of references to past installments, Gundam GQuuuuuuX became a catalyst for interactions between younger and older fans. It also served as an entry point for younger viewers, born long after the original series aired, to discover Gundam for the first time. How was such a movement designed? Continuing our special feature, “Behind the Scenes of Gundam GQuuuuuuX,” we sat down again with Director Kazuya Tsurumaki.

AIMING TO CAPTURE EVERY FAN FROM TEEN TO SIXTIES
GQuuuuuuX INTENDED TO UNITE VETERANS AND NEWCOMERS TO GUNDAM

――To start off, could you tell us who exactly you had in mind when creating GQuuuuuuX?

We wanted to reach young audiences close in age to the protagonist, Machu, a high school girl. But we also had to acknowledge the Gundam franchise’s immense legacy, stretching back 45 years. Original viewers are now in their sixties, and naturally, we aimed for that demographic too. The Gundam market is vast, some build the plastic models without ever watching the anime, while others are devoted fans of the Universal Century timeline, SEED, Wing, 00, Iron-Blooded Orphans, or The Witch from Mercury. It seemed a waste to limit our focus to any single segment. We aimed for a “clean sweep.” If we’re making a Gundam show, why not offer something appealing to every type of fan?

――Each thirty-minute TV episode was packed with callbacks, scenes echoing Z Gundam, familiar musical cues and sound effects referencing iconic moments from the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam, all seamlessly woven into the fresh narrative of new characters. Viewers watching in real-time often sacrificed sleep every late Tuesday night to keep up. How did you orchestrate such dense storytelling?

Everyone on our creative team is deeply versed in Gundam lore. Hideaki Anno, of course, is legendary in his fandom. Screenwriter Yoji Enokido and I may not match Anno’s encyclopedic knowledge completely, but we certainly hold our own. This depth of collective knowledge was foundational. Given the immense legacy and continuous new entries in the Gundam universe, we saw an opportunity to use this heritage as our strength. While creating an alternate universe was possible, I personally have always been passionate about the original Universal Century Gundam, and wanted that to be our anchor. Longtime Gundam fans from forty years ago might spot some imperfections, but we crafted GQuuuuuuX intending to engage passionately with those veteran enthusiasts, too.

Capturing fans ranging from teenage students to seniors over sixty, GQuuuuuuX employed modern techniques designed explicitly to bridge generational gaps. Remarkably, this approach led to success well beyond expectations, the accompanying theatrical film even became the second highest-grossing release in Gundam history. But, as it turned out, not everything unfolded exactly as anticipated…

Originally Planned as a Limited Event, Gundam Film Unexpectedly Achieves Second-Highest Box Office Earnings Unexpected Synergy Emerged Between Veteran and New Fans

Another factor uniquely effective today is that past series are instantly accessible via streaming services. Scenes from First Gundam or Z Gundam referenced in GQuuuuuuX can easily be verified by viewers immediately. We anticipated this would be beneficial. The storyline, heavily based on First Gundam, might initially confuse new viewers unfamiliar with the original. However, when someone familiar with First Gundam identifies references, “That’s from this particular episode,” new fans can instantly check it online. On social media, veteran Gundam fans actively answer newcomers’ questions, making GQuuuuuuX a gateway into Gundam’s rich history. Though we hoped for this effect, we never imagined it would be so successful.

――Did you achieve your initial quantitative and qualitative goals? Apparently, the film achieved the second-highest box office earnings for any Gundam film?

Initially, the theatrical release was intended merely as a promotional event alongside TV broadcasts and streaming. While we didn’t set specific numerical targets, the eventual nationwide distribution, 3.5 billion yen earnings, long-running screenings, and even additional re-releases were extremely gratifying outcomes. We had aimed from the start to create significant buzz. The phenomenon surrounding SEED, sparked by simultaneous nationwide broadcasts, highlighted the importance of real-time shared experiences. If local stations air at different times, viewers lose the collective excitement. Thanks to national TV broadcasting, GQuuuuuuX successfully recreated that communal buzz. Gundam is now deeply woven into popular culture. Comedians referencing Gundam or spontaneously impersonating Char Aznable on variety shows resonate broadly. With a wide, passionate fanbase, tapping into this cultural recognition seemed logical.

――Were there any particular strategies employed during production to generate buzz?

Actually, no. Surprisingly, the scripts were completed long before production announcements, and the final episode’s voice recording was done in advance. Although production continued until the very end, the plot was essentially set, limiting our ability to adjust based on audience reactions. The enthusiastic response from fans was incredibly fortunate and appreciated. Things could have easily gone another way. For audiences anticipating a story dominated by new characters like Machu or Nyaan, appearances by original characters like Char Aznable or Challia Bull might have been confusing or disappointing. Conversely, some longtime fans might have missed their favorite classic characters.

However, the audience enjoyed the experience deeply, leading to wonderful synergy: veteran fans introducing younger viewers to classic characters, and older fans becoming fond of new ones. This wasn’t meticulously planned but rather a fortuitous outcome that exceeded expectations.
