The main mobile suit of the Earth Federation Forces that was developed based on the data from the RX-78 Gundam. Developed since the middle of the One Year War, these suits have been known to operate in various places on Earth and in outer space. Various versions have been developed and the type deployed to the Moore Brotherhood has been upgraded in various places for use in the Thunderbolt sector.
Upgraded points include sealing treatment to the joints, added verniers as well as added head sensors. With these upgrades, it became possible for the suits to avoid damage from collision with debris, increase mobility and improve search abilities. Furthermore, its backpack was replaced with a larger one. Although it isn’t armed like the Full Armor Gundam is, it is equipped with two sub arms and thrusters. The sub arms are utilized to maintain the shields and contribute to improving the defense of the GM.
This particular version of the GM adopts the Core Block. The main body of the GM is able to separate into an A part (upper body) and B part (lower body) forming a core block system in between. Although this is the same system as the Gundam, due to cost issues, it lacks a transformation mechanism into a Core Fighter. However, the adoption of this system certainly has a significant improvement on a pilot’s survival rate.
While the GM has this equipment and system, the battle in the Thunderbolt sector drew brought considerable damage. Twenty four units went out into battle but only a few of them returned. It’s said that this is a episode that tells the intensity of the battle in the sector.
This version of the GM was also put into service at the battle of A Baoa Qu and seems to have been deployed to other units aside from the Moore Brotherhood.
The GM with its large backpack removed. The profile is almost the same as a normal GM, but the details are different such as the shoulder and legs being equipped with verniers. Also, the shape of the slits have been changed for air intake in the chest, but this appears to have been changed in order to avoid debris penetration. In order to equip the large backpack, its standard one was slightly miniaturized. A beam saber is equipped sideways on the bottom as opposed to the upper part of the pack.
The GM as seen equipped with large backpack, shield and beam spray gun. Various weapons are equipped on the deck just before launch. Unlike the Gundam, the shield are not equipped on the arm but only with the sub arms. The sub arms are folded into a box shape when not in use and are unfurled when in use. During deployment, all parts expand and contract allowing for complex movements.
The shield is slightly smaller and varies in shape than the ones equipped on the Full Armor Gundam. The Federation Forces emblem is detailed on the front of the shield as well.
The beam spray gun, the main weapon, has a grip at the bottom of the barrel. Although its shape appears to be different, there seems to be no difference in function or firepower.
Earth Federation Forces common mobile suit manipulator. The Federation’s have a more angular design unlike those of the Principality of Zeon mobile suits. Also, the palm is divided into multiple parts. The finger joints and wrist seem to have an accordion shape to them due to the sealing treatment applied to them.
The structure of the cockpit is almost identical to that of the Gundam. The biggest difference is the shape of the front monitor, whereas the Gundam’s is a curved surface, the GMs is flat. This is due to the core block type of cockpit being utilized. The sight and control levers are the same, but there are also differences such as a lack of control stick for the core fighter. Since Io was a GM pilot and switched models to the Gundam without going through a training period, it is believed that the operating system was standardized across Federation mobile suits.
As a separation type of cockpit system, when the suit is damaged, it is ejected and functions as an emergency pod. Furthermore, although equipped with verniers, their thrust is considerably weak. For the Moore Brotherhood, cases were seen where they were recovered by allies and Balls and such following the battle. Although it has a block shape, it seems to have a flexible structure since it responds to movement such as twisting. In addition, the core block has a structure that is divided into three sections: the central cockpit and left and right parts. Although the central part has six thrusters, they’re not for propulsion but for attitude control. The GM Cannon also utilizes this same core block.
