AMX-014R REBEN-WOLF

During the 1st Neo Zeon War, the Neo Zeon developed and deployed many mobile weapons into combat. The types ranged from variable craft to massive mobile suits and mobile armors, mobile weapons of almost every possible type lent variety to combat. The AMX-014 Doven Wolf is one such unit. While the Doven Wolf is a unit developed by the Neo Zeon, there was a base suit. The craft is said to be a mobile suit aimed at downsizing with reference to the MRX-010 Psycho Gundam Mk-II that the Titans employed during the Gryps War. Developed as a fourth-generation mobile suit based on the units that the Titans handed over to Axis, the Doven Wolf competed with the AMX-011 Zaku III, which was under development at the same time as the next mainline unit. However, since Axis lacked manpower, it was decided that the Doven Wolf would be mass-produced, with its unrivaled performance and formidable firepower. Although the Doven Wolf was mass-produced, due to the war situation growing increasingly worse and the Neo Zeon’s own internal conflicts, only six units were deployed during the war. Operating on Mars, the Zeon Mars was collaborating with Axis, and a plan was proposed as a means of support. The idea was to “mass-produce the Doven Wolf with their own improvements and send it to Earth.” And so, this Reben-Wolf, which is said to be a mass-production type extension of the Doven Wolf, was developed. The name combines the Doven Wolf’s refine (Re) with “leben,” which means life. Thus it is imbued with the idea that the “Doven Wolf is still alive.”

The Reben-Wolf’s specific concept of improvements are as follows:

A. INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY

In response to the unpredictable situation in the Earth Sphere, there was a dire need for Zeon Mars to support the Neo Zeon (formerly Axis) to move forward with their invasion of Earth. To deliver as many units as possible to the Neo Zeon, Zeon Mars’s goals were to reduce mobile suit development costs and improve productivity. Specifically, unlike the Neo Zeon, which introduced the Doven Wolf, Zeon Mars emphasized “Zeon tradition.” As such, they adopted the AMX-011 Zaku III, and following their own improvements to it, production proceeded as the AMX-011 Zaku III Type R. The Zaku III Type R aimed at sought to improve productivity by making a majority of the parts universal, such as parts of the exterior and internal components. The overall appearance has a more Zeon-like design with its rounded shape versus the original model, likely due to these circumstances. It is said that this was one of the factors that Zeon Mars engineers disliked the design of the Doven Wolf (such as its angular armor), which was initially a Federation model. Furthermore, features of the new model designed by Axis have been incorporated, which would be linked to the Doga-based mobile suits later on.

B. REGULATING EXCESSIVE EQUIPMENT

The Doven Wolf was certainly a high-class unit, boasting high combat abilities, and was suited for ace pilots. However, it was difficult for regular soldiers to utilize the large number of firearms and (quasi) psycommu armament equipped on the suit. As such, some of the built-in weaponry deemed excessive has been made optional, and additional equipment would be added as necessary. At the same time, a system was adopted to regulate and add a propulsion system as the large thrusters were said to be excessive and could lead to a decrease in handling. The improved points are as follows:

Body: The chest-mounted mega particle cannon is optional, changed to a system that can select the number to equip. In instances where the suit doesn’t have more than one, it can carry a beam machine gun or anti-ship rifle instead of a mega launcher.

Arms: It’s possible to switch to a normal arm that omits the firing and remote control mechanism. It is said that the difference between the Commander unit and general units as seen with the Doven Wolf were pushed forward.

Backpack: It was replaced with a multi-connector pod that was connected via a drum frame mounted on the abdomen. In addition to various equipment such as the main booster, binders and INCOM, and anti-ship missiles that were standard equipment for the Doven Wolf, it is now possible to mount missile pods, beam launchers, etc. By swapping out the armaments in this fashion, it can be utilized for mid-range support missions and the like. These improved methods are similar in concept to the improvements made by the Zeon Mars to the Zaku III Type R. However, the performance is reduced by rearranging the armament and propulsion equipment of high-class units, making it easier for regular soldiers to handle, which also improves productivity. Since the Doven Wolf and Zaku III were initially over spec units, they maintained that standard even after various improvements. This is considered to be the reason why it succeeded in mass-production in such a short period as a high-performance mass-production unit. The completed units were developed into more than double digits, given to the Earth Dispatch Fleet led by Charles Jr., and sent to the Earth Sphere. As a side note, the concept of “curbing the overbearing performance and improving operability and productivity” is said to be close to the TR-6 Hi-Zack II form from the TR Project.
