[Framework Friday] – ∀ Gundam Science (Installment.02)

Now that I have a novelization project finished up, I’m trying to figure out how to balance my time with relatively obscure Gundam-related material. So, much like the “Translation Tuesday” posts for novel chapters, I decided on “Framework Friday” for Gundam background material. Aren’t I so clever? I guess that means there will eventually be a “Manga Monday” at some point in the future. Oh god. Stop me now, please! Anyways, I posted about some Turn A Gundam goodness quite a while back, but I decided to go back and review the information prior to it since it sets the stage quite nicely! Anyways, enjoy!

Electrical Civilization

One of the two bases of civilization in the Correct Century world is electricity. This is primarily due to the widespread usage of solar cells (commonly known as solar-powered turf), which are incredibly efficient in converting light energy and have the ability to self-replicate. This solar-powered turf is a product of nanotechnology from the old era; however, people in the Correct Century era take it for granted that it is just a different kind of plant that grows wildly in nature.

The power generation capacity of the solar-powered turf is sufficient to meet a single family’s needs. Furthermore, since each household is generally equipped with fuel cells made up of the hydrogen-absorbing alloy “phlogi-stone,” they can receive a minimum amount of power even in cloudy or rainy weather or at night when power generation stops.

On the other hand, in urban and industrial areas that require vast amounts of electricity, electrical power is supplied from hybrid power plants that combine hydrogen internal combustion engines with wind and hydroelectric power, thus maintaining social infrastructures. What’s more, the motors driven by the electric power obtained in these manners are used as dead-copies of the old era’s relics without improvements or analysis.

There was once a time when energy was transmitted from power generation satellites in outer space. However, these were destroyed in battle relatively early on, and no attempts were made to rebuild them after that. All of the ground-based transmission facilities have been lost and are no longer functioning. Some of these facilities are now known to the people as the “Mountain Cycle.”

Every house in the world of Turn A has a green roof because it is covered with solar-powered panels planted with solar-powered turf made from nanomachines.

Phlogi-stones & Internal Combustion Engines

Along with electricity, another pillar that supports the Correct Century civilization is the hydrogen internal combustion engine. This involves burning hydrogen by reacting it with oxygen and utilizing the energy produced by the reaction. This reaction produces zero emissions other than steam or water and doesn’t pollute the environment.

The hydrogen internal combustion engine was created through advanced technology. People in the Correct Century simply build and use them blindly without improvements in the same way as electric motors.

Fuel for the hydrogen internal combustion engines is supplied by an ore called a phlogi-stone, an extremely efficient hydrogen-absorbing alloy (aka an alloy endowed with properties to store hydrogen in its structure). In the old era, phlogi-stone were created by nanomachines. Yet, in the Correct Century era, they are treated like naturally occurring coal and gasoline, powering the engines of cars, aircraft, and industrial machinery.

Urban areas are dotted with phlogi-stone stations, just like the gasoline and charging stations of the old era, so that fresh phlogi-stones can be supplied at any time for vehicles traveling around the city and household fuel cells.

These phlogi-stones are recyclable, and once the stored hydrogen has been depleted, they’re collected through phlogi-stone stations and sent back to specialists. These depleted phlogi-stones are then dumped into the ocean, where they take a considerable amount of time to reabsorb hydrogen. These companies make their living by mining and regenerating phlogi-stones, going back and forth to the coastline every year to provide people with a pollution-free source of energy.

The size of a phlogi-stone is 5-6mm in diameter. It has an irregular and complex tetrapod shape, which is white when it contains hydrogen but turns black when the hydrogen is depleted.

Mineral Resources

Past prosperity saw the consumption of Earth’s mineral resources, which were essential for maintaining civilization. To compensate for this, many resource asteroids were towed near Earth in the old era and played a role in supplying various minerals. Some of these asteroids were decelerated and forced to make soft landings on Earth.

Many of the deposits being mined on Earth in the Correct Century today are resource asteroids brought from space during the old era. The Vicinity mine owned by the Heim family is believed to be one of these asteroid mines.

It also appears that some of the mines in other areas have remains of space colonies that were dropped from space during the wars of the old era.

The entrance to the Heim mine and the people working there. Aluminum and other metals from the wreckage of the old era are mainly mined here.

[Translation Tuesday] – Hathaway’s Flash Chapter.18

In keeping with my weekly novel chapter postings, Chapter.18 of the first volume is now available to read. It looks as though I’ll have this first volume finished up well before the first movie premieres. There will likely be a delay of a week before the final chapter is posted as I need to seriously sit down and tweak some things from it (plus it’s a lengthy installment at almost 2.5x the length of most chapters).

[Archive Diving] – For the Barrel (Serialization.01)

A young boy who grew up looking at a sky covered by walls
had feelings in his heart with no outlet.

While living a nomadic life,
he longed to one day carve his own path.

A future where generations have passed since the days of dreaming
of the vastness of space as a place to settle.

Half a century since emigration into space, brimming with hope.
Even if you tried living in the countryside,
the countryside was becoming a thing of the past.

But the boy was too helpless.
He didn’t even know what his weapon was.

Then one day, he sees a white light.
Convinced that the light will guide him, the boy starts running.

Three Major Revolutions: Particle Accelerators (Aura Road)
A huge living space (space colony).
And the space worlds built by humanoid weapons (machining skin).

At dawn, the war begins.
At dawn, the boy is there.

SERIALIZATION INSTALLMENT.01
Prologue:
Forecast End – Death of a Forecaster

A horrible chill suddenly came over me.

The chills hit me not once, not twice, but three times in succession, gradually breaking my senses. From my head to my neck, my lips trembled, and my knees shook as the chills descended. I tried to raise my voice, but the grime from the maintenance facilities clung to my throat. I couldn’t catch my breath. The palpitations in my heart increased in intensity. My beautiful, silver hair, wiry from the oil and polluted air, spreads out in the sewage of the caved-in floor. Even though my consciousness was fading, I knew this wasn’t a mild case of the common cold.

Luna II, the forward base of the Earth Federation Space Forces Space Command, is located on the asteroid Juno, which has a maximum diameter along its equator exceeding 80km and is fixed in orbit directly opposite the Moon across from Earth. This base is home to hundreds of thousands of military personnel and civilians engaged in related businesses.

Several months ago, a refugee girl named Fraw Bow, who escaped from her hometown aboard the Earth Federation Forces state-of-the-art “Pegasus” by chance, was taken off the ship under the protection of the Earth Federation Forces and housed here on Luna II after a difficult life adrift.

The lack of gravity was not suitable for a long-term stay, and the living conditions weren’t very suitable, as most of the facilities were military, industrial, and mining ones.

Still, Fraw thought, it was better than the Pegasus. I’m sure I breathed in much dirtier air compared to the Pegasus. Still, she felt that it would be so much easier to just get far away from the unconscious self-confidence that person exuded.

It wasn’t the smell of this ship that made Fraw want to crawl out of her own skin or the crude conversations between the male crew members that made her life adrift in space difficult. It was that person.

Sayla Mass. A woman who was also a member of the Pegasus crew. A woman with short-cut, sheer blonde hair and a cocky, cold voice.

The self-confidence she felt in being able to unconsciously perform gestures that would slip into men’s physiology stimulated Fraw’s complex, who had never been able to grow up in a healthy, sunny environment. What is more, the jealousy she felt at having the first man with whom she ever had sex with taken away from her, and the feeling of defeat at this other woman ended up in her removal from the Pegasus.

And yet, Fraw pursed her lips together.

She felt as if Sayla’s own light reached the other side of the Moon. Every time, Fraw hated her ugly, twisted mind and hated Sayla for still tormenting her from so far away.

Just before the chill hit her, Fraw had felt the glow from Sayla’s confidence.

The entire southern block of Luna II had been converted into a refugee camp, where most of the detainees were sent to conduct logistical support. Fraw, like the other refugees, had been assigned a variety of menial tasks. Her eyes were on the cylinders of the electric-powered motor vehicle Elec-car, which she was running through an oil cleaner while watching over fellow refugee children, the war orphans Katz Howan, Letz Kofan, and Kikka Kitamoto.

Fraw still did not have any love for the three children that adored her. Every time they endearingly called her “mommy,” she felt as though she were drifting further away from her dreams of love and ordinary happiness.

”If it weren’t for these children, if only someone else had taken care of them, I could have gotten men off just like Sayla!”

As Fraw felt her heart twisting inside of her as she gazed into the powerfully assertive yet lovely eyes of Kikka clinging to her feet, she saw the light. It was a light that was unbearable to Fraw.

”Again! Again with that damn light!”

But behind the light, there is yet another. A white and distant light that Fraw had never seen before.

 ”Ling! Ling A-bao!”

She was already calling out the boy’s name when she realized that the light belonged to the boy that she had been thinking about. Just then, the light reached her from an area of space far, far away from Luna II, and slammed into her entire body.

Sitting inside the center of a small cockpit with instruments like some kind of laboratory, he found himself feeling unusually calm. The gentle huffs of his breathing echoed inside his helmet. Ling A-bao was biting his lip as he realized how little life he had left.

A few moments earlier, Hayato Subayashi, who was also a member of the Pegasus crew, had been killed by the enemy’s humanoid weapon known as a Machining Skin. The beam weapon mounted on the Machining Skin’s arm enveloped Hayato’s C109 Gunboy Orville, aka ‘Cannon Boy,’ like a shower, and its skeletal silhouette collapsed in an instant, vanishing in the middle of the attack. The light from the explosion swirled in the vacuum of space, steadily increasing in gravity. To Ling, it looked as if a huge circle of light had blossomed.

He wasn’t upset. He felt frustrated and sad, though. In the end, he couldn’t even have a simple conversation with him. Still, even though he couldn’t say much to him, he felt like he was getting closer to him during this war. When he thought about it, he felt a burning in the depths of his soul. The screams from C108, the pilot of the same Cannon Boy, Koo YC Teng, were still ringing in his ears, and it hurt.

But, still. Ling swallowed hard and stomached Hayato’s death.

”If this is fate, then so be it! Right, Hayato?!”

The newly prepared Machining Skin G3, otherwise known as ‘Ghost,’ replaced the wrecked Gunboy Wilbur and had taken to Ling’s ever-increasing reaction time. Based on the basic movement system common to the Gunboy series, it consists of three portions: a lower body seat that is completely fastened to the pilot to follow the mobility of the Machining Skin, a moveable waist seat that provides directional support for the suit, and a fixed upper body seat. The cockpit of the Ghost, equipped with additional state-of-the-art sensory devices that corresponded to the pilot’s specialized abilities, is a fierce match with Ling, who had saddled Hayato’s death and steeled himself.

”It’s got some moves! Guess I played right into the palm of your hand, isn’t that right, Dad?!”

The dilemma over piloting a suit designed by his own father had already faded away. He was sure he’d be glad to know that now. The picture that had been flickering in his mind, but had never taken shape, was starting to fall into place and tell Ling of the future. It was a forecast, one of those abilities that only Ling and a few other people, Newtype’s, were prepared for.

”Tch! Just because it’s war doesn’t mean you can do whatever the hell you want!!”

Ling maneuvered the pilot suit and the lower body seat with a flick of his hips, which seemed to float around his locked waist, changing the posture of the Ghost, and then raced off towards the flash of light where Hayato was.

”Pegasus, this is Ghost! It’s Ling! A laser attack is targeting this sector of space! We’re all going to be killed! We need to get out of here, now!”

 But that was it.

The next thing she knew, children were surrounding her, looking worried.

”Are you alright?” “Are you okay?”

”Mommy, let me see your face!”

Fraw couldn’t help but cry when she heard their voices. For the first time, she thought of the children who touched her with their alluring and energetic touch. That made her happy. I’m sorry, Katz, Letz, Kikka… I couldn’t love you. I’ve been a hindrance to you…”

And she felt she was still sorry.

I’m so sorry, Ling. I couldn’t accept you as someone special, and I had to run away from you.

 Please forgive me, Ling.

We won’t see one another again, Ling.

 Farewell, my only Ling.

The rays of light emitted by the enemy’s machining skin hit the Ghost directly. Ling, who had already foreseen his own passing, should have been prepared to die unwaveringly. That’s why he intended to entrust things. The way he looks. The plans he would be unable to fulfill.

”Have a good look, everyone. The sorry death of somebody who was thought special! To those here, on this battlefield! To all those in this airspace! And to that boy!”

 And yet, and yet…

 To be continued

[Investigative Journalism?] – A New View of the Universal Century

So a rather tongue-in-cheek mook was just released in Japan called [Testimony] Mobile Suit Gundam: 100 Years of the Universal Century as seen by Bungei Shunju. Articles published in the book follow the format of the investigative reporting that the weekly news magazine Shukan Bunshun follows. I’m chuckling over some of the entries in the book and had to share one of them:

Was it the Flames of Love that Scorched Hong Kong City?
Capturing a secret meeting between Karaba and Titans MS pilots!!

► 0087.06.29. An absurd war struck Hong Kong City. Following the arrival of Karaba’s Auduhmla, the Titans Sudori (both are Garuda-class super-large transport craft) launched an attack in pursuit of it. Mobile suits from both sides went to battle against one another. We interviewed a citizen of Hong Kong city who witnessed the entire event.

“Hong Kong City, it’s all gone to hell,” said Mr. Y, a dockworker, and veteran who has worked here for over a quarter of a century.

“When I heard that Karaba’s Audhumla arrived, I had a hunch that shit had hit the fan. I knew the Titans would be after ’em. There’s an airport in Hong Kong City, but it’s way too small for a giant plane over 500 meters wide. The best place for them to land would be at sea, but then the port facilities would be targeted for attack. I thought to myself, ‘I better get the hell out of here.’ My sister lives in Von Braun on Luna, so I paid a visit to Luio & Co. to buy a blackout ticket for the shuttle.”

Hong Kong City can be roughly divided into Old Town and New Hong Kong. The former has always been smack in the middle of historical upheavals and is not very safe, but recently the latter has been on the decline as well, Mr. Y said.

EVEN THE FEDERATION LEASED LAND IS A BATTLEFIELD!

“In the end, you couldn’t even step foot inside Luio & Co. There was a big fight going on inside with a bunch of ’em. We had to high-tail it out of there. I heard it was some of those famous people from the One Year War, but that’s probably just a rumor. Then right after that, this huge black mobile suit, maybe forty meters long, comes rushing into the city, firing beams from all over its body. It was one of the Titans’ new models, but it was just an indiscriminate attack.

It started fighting with a white mobile suit that launched from the Audhumla, but the battle ended in a painful draw. We, as citizens, lost. Distribution became paralyzed, and robberies ran rampant.”

Seen on the shoulder of the black mobile armor that attacked the city is the figure of the young man who stole Mr. Y’s bike. (Courtesy of the eyewitness)

A few days later, Mr. Y says he was robbed of some of his property.

“I had my motorcycle stolen by some juvenile delinquent. I chased after him with my car and found him on the rooftop of some building. He was having one of those lover’s quarrels with some pretty chick with purple lips. I managed to snap a pic of them from below. The two of them ran away into a crowd of people, but I found the girl and followed her. That’s when I saw her there. I saw her get into that black suit that had just rammed into the building. Then the indiscriminate attacks started up again, and the whole city was in flames.

I fought like hell to get back to the port, and I saw that white Gundam getting closer to a Gundam that was submerged in the water. Then, it blew my mind. Coming out of the cockpit was that young motorcycle thief! I don’t think it’s possible, but maybe it was a sordid love affair that caused Hong Kong City to go up in flames.”

Is the girl who was meeting the boy the pilot of the mysterious giant mobile armor?

We certainly hope that Mr. Y’s imagination has got the best of him. Otherwise, the citizens of Hong Kong City who burned to death won’t be resting in peace.

[Framework Friday] – ∀ Gundam Science (Installment.01)

∀ Gundam’s Scientific Investigation

It is said that ∀ Gundam is set several thousand to tens of thousands of years after the end of the space age, where despite humanity advancing into the cosmos, the Earth Sphere was facing a devastating situation due to wars and environmental destruction.

Are the Earth and outer space in the same situation as they were in the past? The stage setting is a crucial and fundamental element in the creation of any work. In this respect, ∀ Gundam has extensively detailed setting documentation in areas that aren’t visible on the surface. Here, we actually had someone in charge of the setting research.

That someone is Mr. Shigeru Morita of Studio Nue, and he wrote about the state of civilization on the Earth and the Moon for ∀ Gundam.

The Truth Behind the Dark History

In the world of the Correct Century, accounts of Earth’s past passed down as “Dark History” have been considered to be the product of fiction and delusion, with no credibility whatsoever. Stories of humanity’s expansion into the cosmos where, that as its stage, it repeatedly waged massive wars with unimaginable superweapons is certainly hard to believe. For this reason, “Dark History” has been regarded as occult-like defamatory literature that some fanatical believers sometimes vocally opine about, only to be either ignored or ridiculed by the general public.

Nonetheless, the situation changed dramatically following the Moonrace’s “Earth Return” led by Dianna Soreil. The fact that humans were living on the Moon and the existence of mobile suits—the gigantic humanoid fighting machines operated by Dianna Counter, the Moonrace’s army—all inevitably proved that the “Dark History,” or the history behind the scenes, was true after all.

According to the “Dark History,” humanity had been driven to the brink of extinction many times over and finally succeeded in putting an end to its history of warfare several thousand years ago. Their means to do so were through “forgetting and falsifying history” and “denying scientific and technological civilization.” The people rewrote history, sealed up the truth of the past, and denied the scientific and technological civilization that was a major factor in fanning the flames of war.

Rebuilding Earth’s Civilizations

Those who control history and education can influence the values of those who study it in any way they wish.

At the end of the old era, those who sought to build a new “Correct Century” world rejected “evil civilizations” by positioning progress and curiosity as evil, thus avoiding the deadly conflicts that had plagued them for thousands of years. Over the years, the systemic control of history and education morphed into an implicit consensus of the entire human race, and the public’s aversion to the study of “Dark History” and attempts to advance scientific civilization had deepened to a level that was almost second nature.

As of the year C.C.2345, the average level of civilization on Earth is close to the beginning of the 1900 A.D. However, this is merely a pretense, as in the background of civilization lies the remnants of for former super-technological era. While denying technological civilization, the people of the time did not try to regress into an uncivilized, primitive civilization.

A typical example of super-technology tucked away in the background of civilization is the source of energy supply. Most of the mines scattered across the planet’s surface are resource asteroids brought down from outer space in the old days, yet no one knows about them now in the “Correct Century.”

Exhausted Resources

The prosperity of civilization over the past several millennia has completed depleted Earth’s resources. Fossil fuels (coal and oil) have been depleted in the Correct Century world. Methane hydrates (methane gas deposits at the bottom of the ocean), one of the few remaining energy resources, have no technology available to mine them. The use of nuclear energy has been deliberately abandoned, and past administrations were extremely hesitant to pollute the environment, which has led people to utilize energy sources that are less aggressive on the natural environment. The only sources of energy currently utilized on the planet are hydropower, solar power, wind power, wave power, geothermal power, and power from hydrogen combustion, which does not emit hazardous waste.

A Sampling from Cocoon on the Moon, Fruit on the Earth

A great many substances are made up of nano-machines, following instructions in the programs they contain. For example,  there are numerous instances of new types of nanomachines that can attach to existing nanomachines, and transform the architecture. If we had introduced a program dedicated to maintaining environmental sustainability on nanomachines, it could have been possible to ‘eliminate all traces of civilization on Earth by swamping it with nanomachines’. Nanomachines programmed to create reinforced concrete and steel could also be programmed to insert soil-shaping programmes to change these to clay. This means that buildings and highways made with different building materials could be made to break down over a long time period and be transformed into soil suitable for growing plants.

This is how the ‘nanomachine hazard’ which caused the rapid collapse of the Old World civilizations came about.  When the Earth was overrun with war and environmental destruction, the people of the Old World overan the place with artificial nanomachines, and pulled the plug on their own civilization.

What I saw in my dream as the fruit of the first tree, (turn A), was an iron hammer urging humankind to commit suicide. Turn X was created from a last gasp  attempt to oppose the collapse of civilization.  After it lost out to Turn A, it drifted to the Moon, and slept for a long time.  Turn A, which had been incorporated into the Mountain Cycle was revived and started working again.

Guided by memories stored in a drop of blood, a fragment of a cell, which could not be forgotten if I tried…

[Data Dump] – Before ∀: Mobile Suits Buried in the Dark History

What started as a casual glance at the MS Evolution Chart from Mobile Suit Bible.86 ended up sending me down a rabbit hole to find more nuggets of information on relatively obscure mobile suits. So, I elected to dive into some of the suits presented in the charts.

「テストベッド∀」 機体解説
∀ガンダム試作 性能実験テストベッド機

Testbed ∀ Unit Exposition
∀ Gundam Prototype: Performance Testing Testbed Unit

So, there was a shift from a stand-alone tactical weapon to a system weapon operating with a complex, large-scale support system. That is at the heart of the design concept of the Testbed ∀. The Testbed ∀ is one of the prototypes of the ∀ Gundam.

The purpose of this machine was to demonstrate the “teleportation” function, which is the greatest feature of the ∀ Gundam, and to acquire data on it. At first glance, the head closely resembles that of the Turn X, the prototype of this machine.

This means the cockpit of this machine was placed in the head. Around the time the Testbed ∀ was built, this combination was created for two reasons: the original cockpit was a dummy for data collection, and to provide a means of escape to protect the test pilot.

The main part of the upper body is occupied by a platform for receiving weapons, ammunition, etc., sent in from the outside via teleportation. If performing as intended, weapons would materialize and be used by the ∀ Gundam as it penetrated deep into enemy territory.

The text mentions something about the “Gossen Effect” which is an extension of morphogenetic field theory. Beats me. Anywho, continuing on! This suit was SUPPOSED to showcase teleportation abilities, but this function was never fully realized…

So, the mass production prototype that followed this suit had the teleportation function itself removed. Still, there is no record of the ∀ Gundam teleporting through space and purifying the Earth through the power of the Moonlight Butterfly. The end.

Addendum: Mobile Suit Bible 86 lists this particular suit as “System-98 ∀ Gundam Prototype & Performance Testing Testbed Unit (Testbed ∀).” Sheesh that’s a mouthful.

『オリジナル ターンX』機体解説
ターンX初期生産型

Original Turn X Unit Exposition
Turn X Early Production Type

There are significant differences between the original Turn X unit and the one that was later unearthed from the Mountain Cycle on the Moon. At first glance, the most distinctive features are the presence or absence of scars across the chest armor, the difference in the right arms armor, and the structure of the platform across the back. Furthermore, some areas across the suit have been damaged in battle, the history of which is unknown, and a significant portion of these areas are discolored due to malfunctions with the nanoskin. Based on this, it is believed that the opponent it faced in battle was a weapon of equal or superior performance to the Turn X, but only the Turn X knows what kind of weapon it was.

The right arm of the original suit can be seen with what appears to be a shape similar to that of a human. However, it seems that it was still equipped with a thermal energy cauterizing weapon known as the “Shining Finger” at this point. The fact that this shape couldn’t be recreated in later repairs may have been due to technical obstacles.

The back platform is quite simple, unlike its progeny. The original Turn X was more of an interplanetary high mobility fighter with a striking hue to it, and this platform in particular was the main propulsion system for it. It can be said that it was converted into weaponry in a future generation shows the tactical ideology of the suit’s owners at the time had gradually deviated from that of the original.

[Novelization] – Twilight Axis is Finished

Today marks another momentous occasion for the Gundam fandom. 68,350+ characters later (not counting character and mecha bios), the Twilight Axis novel is finally finished and available to fans in its entirety. What started as a lofty and ambitious project back in 2016 stalled out in August 2017 for almost three years, sadly. I honestly had no idea where time had gone at that point. I’m currently working on a compilation version of the novel that will model the actual paperback/electronic version. If anyone is interested in proofreading it for me, please let me know. Thank you to everyone who has supported this project along the way! I’m sorry it took so long to deliver it, but it’s finally done. I guess this damn pandemic allowed me to get more translating done than I had been able to do in the past!

STAY WITH YOU ~Like the Stars~ Lyrics

Piggybacking on the post earlier today, here are the lyrics from the ending song of the Gaia Gear radio drama:

STAY WITH YOU ~Like the Stars~
Yoko Ichikawa

友達さえ 遠く見える そんなときも
負けないでね 壊れそうな 淋しさに

Even when your friends seem so far away
Don’t give in to the painful loneliness

心の弱さも あなたの 優しさに 変るから

Because the weakness of your heart will also become your kindness

夢を忘れないで 輝くその瞳を 信じてる
STAY WITH YOU 星のように
遠くで見つめている あなたを

Don’t forget your dreams, I believe in your shining eyes
STAY WITH YOU
I’m looking at you from a distance like the stars

泣きつかれて 眠りついた そんな夜も
いつかひとり 思い出せる 微笑んで

Even on the nights when you fall asleep crying
You’ll recall someone that will make you smile

流した涙が 明日の 素敵な答えだから

Because the tears you’ve shed are the best answer for tomorrow

夢を忘れないで 願いが叶う 朝が やがて来る
STAY WITH YOU 星のように
どこかで 見守ってる あなたを

Don’t forget your dreams, the morning when your wish comes true will finally arrive
STAY WITH YOU
I’m watching over you from somewhere like the stars

あなたの優しい微笑みが だれより好きだから

Because I love your gentle smile more than anyone else

だけど一人いつか 果てない闇の中で 迷ったら
STAY WITH YOU 思い出して
いつでも となりにいる わたしは

But when you’re lost in the endless darkness alone, remember I’ll
STAY WITH YOU
And that I’ll always be by your side

Voice of Gaia Lyrics

Something out of the ordinary for the site. Since I was celebrating my Gaia Gear poster win on Twitter, I thought I’d visit the theme songs from the radio drama. Here’s a translation of the opening theme song:

VOICE OF GAIA
Yoko Ichikawa

どれほど争えば 終わるのでしょう
悲しみで綴られた歴史(ヒストリー)

How much conflict will it take for this to end?
A history written in sorrow

あなたは また ひとり 旅立つのでしょう
果てしない荒野へと 今

You will embark on your journey alone again
To a place of boundless wilderness, right now

ひび割れた 風の大地に
聞こえるわ 遠い祈りの歌が

In this land of crackling winds
I can hear prayer songs in the distance

愛のレジスタンス あなたの夢を
悲しみから そっと 守りたい

With the resistance of love, I want to
Gently protect your dreams from misery

心はどんなにDISTANCE
離れていても 感じている
きっと 命をつないだ あなただけを

No matter the distance between our hearts
I always only feel you
The one who brought our lives together

いつの日か あなたは 出会うのでしょう
探し求めてた自分に

Someday, you will surely meet
the self you had been searching for

朝焼けの 地平線へと
飛び立つわ 白い翼ひろげて

Fly away into the horizon as the sun rises
Spreading your white wings

愛のレジスタンス 彷徨う星を
導きたい
もっと 未来へと

With the resistance of love, I want to
Guide the wandering stars
Further into the future

溢れる涙はDISTANCE
遙かな時を 超えて二人
きっと 巡りあうための 誓いだから

Our falling tears will transcend
These distant times
As a promise that we will surely meet again

ひび割れた 風の大地に
聞こえるわ 遠い祈りの歌が

In this land of crackling winds
I can hear prayer songs in the distance

愛のレジスタンス

きっと 命をつないだ あなただけを・・・

With the resistance of love
I want to
Gently protect your dreams from misery
No matter the distance between our hearts
I always only feel you
The one who brought our lives together…

GUNDAM ZZ NOVELIZATION SUMMARY

Someone help me, please! I’ve been sucked into the whacky world that is Gundam ZZ! This is what I get for venturing too far down the dang rabbit hole. At any rate, I’ll slowly be summarizing chapters from the second volume of the series. At some point, I may review the first one, but since a bulk of the new information lies in this particular volume, I’m sticking with this. Check back to this post for updates or poke me on Twitter (@zeonicscans) to see where things stand!

ANIMEDIA’S GUNDAM ZZ PART 2 TIDBITS

Diving down the rabbit hole of Gundam lore is a never-ending task. Nonetheless, when information is staring you in the face as you’re translating from it, it’s slightly embarrassing to admit how you missed something. As our lengthy discussions surrounding all things related to Gundam ZZ continued over on Twitter, toysdream (aka Mark Simmons) pointed out the “missing” source of the hot button issue of Elpeo Ple’s name. So, I donned my translation hat and decided to go all-in for the random sidebar blurbs dotting the Mecha Encyclopedia section of the book. Sit down and buckle up! This post has some info the Japanese side missed! The following is translated from the pages of Animedia’s Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ Part.2 book that was published back in 1987. This is the very same book I’m translating the original ZZ draft from.

WERE ALL THE ANIMATORS GIVEN THE AX?! THE HORRORS BEHIND REJECTED MECHA

In the bizarre colony of Tigerbaum in Episode 40 and 41, many replicas of underwater suits from previous works and rejected mecha popped up, much to our delight. However, there’s a tear-jerking tale behind this! To start, Episode 40 and 41 came about because the series air time was extended, so they were made for fun and completely unrelated to the main story. So, sparing no imagination, the staff decided to bring out the Zogok and Acguy mobile suits, which were rejected for previous Gundam works. Yet, while they have their own plastic models, they did not have any setting materials. The animation staff was given plastic models and the plastic models’ blueprints for them to draw from.

THE GEYMALK IS A MASSIVE MOBILE SUIT!

Piloted by Chara Soon, the mobile suit Geymalk resembles a moving mega cannon. In the setting notes for this mobile suit, it has a head height of 22 meters, but in the drawings, it was supposed to appear as a mammoth mobile suit in the Mantha-class. So then why did it become smaller? Initially, the Geymalk was planned to be released as a plastic model, and in order to go on sale at the 1/144 scale, it had to be around 20 meters in size. However, the manufacturer removed it from the release list in order to release variations of the old mecha (such as the Dwadge) that appeared in the Earth arc. Poor mobile suit.

THE ADORABLE FAIRY, ELPEO PLE

Elpeo Ple is super popular and her name also has a backstory to it. Director Tomino is the one who came up with her name. The director was reading a book that talked about a family of adorable fairies, so he used their name. In other words, the people of El. However, there was an issue with the name. When he suggested the name to the scriptwriter, Mr. Endo, he rejected it, saying, “But we already have Elle and Roux.” Despite that, he managed to get it through as he took a particular liking to the name Elpeo Ple.

THE DOVEN WOLF IS A GUNDAM?!

In the early stages, the Doven Wolf had the head of a Gundam, not the Zaku-style head we see today. So why did they decide to redesign the head? The Doven Wolf was initially designed as a psycommu mobile suit, a development of the Psycho Gundam, that even ordinary soldiers could operate. Because of this, it had a Gundam-type head and was called the G-5 (the 5th Gundam), but General Director Tomino said, “Let’s not have another Gundam on the enemy side,” so the head design was hastily redrawn with a new one. So, Kobayashi and Akitaka, the mecha designers, have a design for the fifth Gundam.

GLEMY AND PLE ARE SIBLINGS!

The relationship between Elpeo Ple and Ple Two was not made clear on-screen, but fans are still curious about it. So, we will tell you about the secrets of the origins of Elpeo Ple, Ple Two, and Glemy for good measure. It may have been unclear on screen, but the setting notes had already been fleshed out. First, let’s talk about Glemy. He was born inside a test-tube, by artificially fertilizing the egg of a woman with Newtype qualities with Gihren Zabi’s (who appeared in previous works) sperm. Both Ples were also artificially created in the same manner, from Gihren Zabi and a Newtype woman, so they are Glemy’s sisters in a sense. However, the egg used to make them were from a different woman than Glemy’s, and they are artificially created identical twins with the exact same genetics (DNA). This is why Elpeo Ple and Ple Two look identical. Ple Two’s personality was changed via imprinting after she was born.

To add to that, the Newtype Corps, which Glemy was saving until the final battle, are also test-tube babies like Glemy and Ple. Glemy felt that the Cyber-Newtype’s used by Haman were too unstable and had limited Newtype abilities (evident from the fact that Ple Two was able to control the Psycho Gundam MK-II which Rosamia, a Cyber-Newtype, could not), so he created an army of test-tube babies instead of using Cyber-Newtype. What a ruthless person, though, to use his brethren as soldiers.

Mobile Suit Z Gundam and Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, which spanned for two years, will end with Episode.47 “Farewell, Warrior*” to be aired on January 31st. But, this does not spell the end of the Gundam saga… We’re on the verge of new developments!

▼ THE ENDING OF ZZG’S FINAL STORY

Translation has been omitted due to it being a summary of Episode.47 with no new or relevant information.

▼ HAMAN & GLEMY: JUST WHO ARE THEY?!

We have covered the final episode at a glance, but many things are still shrouded in mystery… Many of you must have thought the same. Yes, for example, “Mineva (in ZZ) was just an ordinary girl,” her saying “I will not become like my sister,” and the “bloodline” mentioned by Glemy that meant Glemy and Ple are related? All of these mysteries were not made clear in the main story of ZZG, it seems. According to Director Tomino’s “Tomino Memo,” all of these settings had already been fleshed out. It is unclear why it was not depicted in the main story, but let us unravel the mystery once and for all.

First of all, Haman’s identity. She is the younger sister of Zena (Mineva’s mother and) the wife of Dozle, the 3rd son of the Zabi family, and was Dozle’s lover. After losing Dozle to her sister, Haman swore to take revenge on the Zabi family. She became the guardian of Mineva only to use the restoration of the Zabi family as a cover to advance her own agenda.

On the other hand, Glemy actually has no father or mother. He is a clone created from the sperm left behind by Gihren Zabi, the dictator, in the same way as Ple and Ple Two. This is why Glemy clung on to their blood relations and was convinced that he could mentally control Ple Two.

Now, about Mineva. In the final episode, she confessed that she is only a body double. It appears that the real Mineva was taken away by Char during the time in between Z and ZZ. Is he also trying to revive the Zabi Family…? Now, we have an even deeper mystery on our hands.

(Note: Here’s the old backstory about the origin of Glemy here.)

▼ WHERE IS TOMINO’S ANIME HEADED?

So, Zeta Gundam was depicted as an acknowledgment of reality. That is to say, in the first series of “Gundam,” the catchphrase was “One day, it will be possible for people to become Newtypes and connect their hearts and minds.” Still, the theme in Zeta was “However, mankind is still unable to achieve this ascension because their souls are weighed down by gravity…“, presenting the vision of today’s social circumstances. That led to the portrayal of the tragic final scene in Zeta.

In contrast, ZZ depicted a dream for the future, suggesting “Someday, somehow…” Judau, who couldn’t be further from a perfect Newtype, took the opportunity to reflect on himself and went to Jupiter, and in the end, his consciousness was completely connected to Kamille’s, successfully opening up his confined heart. Humans will someday be able to connect with one another… The grand scheme of the Gundam saga earned the opportunity to explore new horizons thanks to the two years depicted in Zeta and ZZ.

Will humans truly be able to connect our hearts and minds? It set the stage for the next Gundam series to explore the roles that true Newtypes will play, fighting for either Char or Amuro’s ideals.

The previous Gundam series and its novel, three movies, MSV, MS Wars, Z Gundam and its novel, and ZZ Gundam concluded the Gundam Saga in a way. However, this appeared to be just a prelude, and Yoshiyuki Tomino seems to be set on continuing with the Gundam Saga as he did with the “Tales of Bystone Well.” It is still up in the clouds whether it will be the rumored movie or a new TV anime series…

So, what significance did Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ have? In short, it was probably an attempt to depict a refined version of the theme that was not fully illustrated in Zeta Gundam. Tomino’s animes always revolve around the central theme of the salvation of people’s souls and the soul’s struggles connected subconsciously in the fight against evil. This series was also packed full of these themes. However, in “Gundam,” this theme was sort of concluded through Amuro’s exclamation of “Nothing feels as good as this!“, so it may be a complicated theme to explore again in a Gundam Saga.

GUNDAM-CLUB ’86-11

An interesting discussion cropped up following the release of Mobile Suit Breakdown: the Gundam Anime Podcast‘s analysis of the disastrous origin of Elpeo Ple’s name. The widely accepted explanation is that the staff named her after a famous lolicon fanzine titled Lemon People, which only served to bastardize the “big brother” theme in the series with pedophilia. When you compare the series to the original plan, there is no mention of either Ple or Judau’s sister Leina. Instead, Judau was doomed to be another one of Tomino’s heroes with a mommy complex and bizarre fascination with older women. But, that’s a discussion and presentation for another day (which I’m currently working on).

Until I receive another magazine with an interview regarding Ple’s character, there are other theories surrounding the naming (LP Button, Elle People, Elf People, Eldorado People, etc). Nonetheless, here’s a little tidbit that was presented in Bandai’s B-CLUB 12.

Adieu, Elpeo Ple… and you, too, Ple Two

She’s a very pretty girl, a nice girl. It may have been her fate to die, but I still felt bad for her.

These are the words of Mr. Meigo Endoh (Note: the pen name for Akinori Endo), the main writer of Gundam ZZ. He reminisces about Elpeo Ple, the Newtype warrior who died all too soon with the following comments.

I originally wanted to create a girl with her personality. When I was meeting with Director Tomino, he told me that there was going to be a girl named Ple, and I was thrilled because she was a character with exactly the type of personality I wanted to have in the series. I was also delighted to see that the childish, energetic personality she showed when she was first introduced remained relatively consistent until the end.

Ple’s free-spirited personality created some problems for Judau from the beginning. Still, from the time she went down to Earth, she also had her bittersweet moments, like when she began getting physically abusive with Leina out of her brotherly admiration for Judau. She was able to move Judau to say, “that’s my sister,” even though she was a Cyber-Newtype because Judau understood her sadness.

On the other hand, after she landed on Earth, Ple would end up watching too many people die. Even after being physically and emotionally scarred by the colony drop on Dublin, she still takes off to save Judau and the Argama when she senses that they’re under threat. This threat is none other than Ple Two, the girl who has the same face as Ple. Having learned kindness, Ple is inevitably defeated by the overwhelming power of Ple Two.

Then, Judau’s anger explodes when Ple dies!

Ple died, but it’s also possible to say that ‘Ple died, but she didn’t actually die yet.’ This is because Ple’s character is essential to Judau’s character until close to the very end of the series. Of course, Ple’s character is by no means essential in terms of the Gundam series or the theme of ZZ, but on the other hand, she was critical to the story of ZZ.”

In terms of newly revealed character backstories like the fact that Ple was actually a Cyber-Newtype, Mr. Endo writes that “I wrote extensively about these kinds of character settings that I couldn’t put into the TV series in the “ZZ” novels (2 books). Fans of the series will definitely not want to miss them.

Elpeo Ple brings out the melancholy in the character of Judau, and even though the story in the Earth arc tends to be dark, Elpeo Ple stirred things up with her trademark cheerfulness. She ends her fleeting life as “Ple Two Under Gravity.” And with her rests yet another tragedy…

World of Early Drafts [Part.1] – Zeta Gundam Prototype

The Zeta Gundam television series that we’ve come to know was vastly different when it was originally pitched back in July 1984. Depicted in the pages of Animedia’s Zeta Gundam Complete Record Edition is Tomino’s original prototype for the series, complete with plot synopsis, characters, world-building info, and more. The product is, however, a sign of the times. Tomino seems to have fallen prey to a somewhat racially-biased stance based on the background of one of the characters. Please note that this document is over 35 years old and doesn’t reflect current ways of thinking, opinions, or ideals. Click the cover image below to view the translated material.

This project was a major undertaking and a bit of a challenge. If you have any spare hytes, cools, gilla or luke, please consider tossing some my way. Donation button is on the right.

16th Year Celebration Bonanza! (There’s translations this time!)

It’s hard to believe how long I’ve been working on Gundam-related material. I “technically” count the group formation as of July 4th since that’s when I bought the old zeonic-corps domain, but the first project (Gundam Sentinel) was started on October 6th, 2003. So in every right, I’ve been doing this stuff for almost seventeen years! Yikes! I still wonder where all the time goes and whether I’ll ever truly have the website that is outlined flawlessly in the back of my mind. One day I’ll pay for a modern layout with all the bells and whistles and get cracking on porting everything over, or one day a magic coding fairy/wizard will grace me with their presence and aide me on my quest. Every year I keep saying that I’ll get more projects done, but I seem to get further and further behind (although do I?).

I have a terrible habit of forgetting the anniversary of that which I love to do. But this year I remembered! Hurray! I’m still one of the only people continuing to do this stuff, and it amazes me that after so many years, the hatred and animosity from the anons online are still there. I’m too slow, I have too many things, blah blah blah. I honestly don’t care anymore, and I never really did. They can bugger off for all I care. They still download and reference whatever it is I put out anyway, so go figure.

Nonetheless, I continue along my path of Gundam fandom translating. I never imagined that I’d end up getting banned from the Gundam Wiki because I corrected too many gross errors that they made. Kinda sad, since partnering with balofo would’ve been pretty awesome and I’m sure we could’ve made a kickass website. Ah well. Haters gonna hate. I still have the goal in my head to get my own Gundam Project/Gundam.com type of site officially up and running, but I’ve become so accustomed to the hodgepodge style of this website it’s almost pointless. One day. One day.

Anyways, that’s all I had to say. To the many friends I’ve made over the years, thank you for your help! To the staff that tirelessly worked on my projects: I’m still indebted. To the fans who continue to donate to see these projects come to light: you are what keep me going. Don’t ever give up. Without you, I don’t even bother.

Thank you all. Let’s see how much longer I can keep the light burning.

So, in celebration of 16+ years, I’ve got two translations for you!

As always, thank you again! Don’t forget to donate, please!

INTERVIEW SERIES COLLECTION

Mobile Suit Gundam is said to be one of the biggest epochs in the history of TV animation. For Mobile Suit Z Gundam, the greatest concern with animation in 1985 is that the director who created the work, Yoshiyuki Tomino, would depict that world again seven years later. Still, when talking about these works, once cannot do so without Director Tomino. While that is something shared across all of his works, it is for Gundam series in particular. So, in this interview, the questions were posed with the idea of “the world after seven years” in mind. Rapport Deluxe published this interview in one of their books released back in 1986. It provides unique insight into how things could have played out and just what Tomino was thinking when he first submitted his draft for the show back in October of 1984. Click the cover below to check out the translated interview!

DIVING INTO THE MRX-SERIES

There isn’t that much information around for some of the lesser-known suits from the 90s, simply because some of the design ideas were so far out there. Nonetheless, let’s dive into what little information we have available:

MRX-002 NT専用プロトタイプガンダム
MRX-002 Newtype Use Prototype Gundam

What We Know: An evolved version of the Alex, equipped with a total of 10 wire bits on both arms, both feet, and the backpack. This is referred to as the psycommu system, and that the bits can attack freely. Each section is equipped with verniers to cover for the excess weight. The vernier on the back can be separated a operate as a fighter. The size was roughly 30 meters, putting it between the Mk-II and Psycho Gundam. The suit was only designed and never manufactured. It is said to be the prototype of Psycho Gundam.

RX-78NT-X/MRX-003 ネティクス
RX-78NT-X/MRX-003 NT-X

What We Know: The NT-X is one of the Newtype exclusive machines developed at the Murasame Labs, a Newtype research institute established in April U.C.0082. As an evolved version of the Newtype-use prototype mobile suit Alex, this unit was originally constructed at the Augusta base but was handed over to the Murasame Labs and given a new model number of MRX-003. Around the same time period was the MRX-002 NT Use Prototype Gundam. A characteristic of the NT-X’s equipment was its wired control bits, which repurposed the technology from wired beam cannons, so much so that the unit became so large it was unbalanced because it was mounted on a normal size mobile suit. Little experimental data could be obtained because pilots capable of piloting it through Newtype brainwaves were rare. Using this problem as a learning tool, the Murasame Labs returned to the same specs as the Zeong, and the Augusta Labs developed it as an INCOM through the support of a learning computer.
